They were standing on the topmost tier of what seemed to be stone benches running all around the room and descending in steep steps like an amphitheater, or the courtroom in which Harry had been tried by the Wizengamot. What about a partially-animate object, like a magical portait? And finally, a living person?

All of these are potential ways to learn more about the veil, and the nature of death. If you discover that resurrection is impossible or so difficult as to be impractical , then you might want to try talking to them instead. This is a particularly popular idea in Muggle as well as magical culture. Notice that the different characters hear different things. When they surround that veil [in Order of the Phoenix], I was trying to show that depending on their degree of skepticism or belief about what lay beyond — because Luna, of course, is a very spiritual character.

Luna believes firmly in an afterlife. And she feels them speaking or hears them speaking much more clearly than Harry does. This is the idea of faith. On the dais stood the Veil, which was represented as a tall stone pointed archway that looked so ancient, cracked and crumbling that it seemed amazing that it was still standing especially as it was not supported by any surrounding wall , and the archway was hung with the Veil; which appeared as a tattered black curtain, gently fluttering and swaying very slightly "as though it had just been touched" perhaps due to the souls of the dying passing unseen into the next life through it.

Communication through the Veil appeared to be impossible, though when a living person approached it, the souls of the dead, recognising a loved one nearby, would try to communicate. Though the living could have the strangest feeling that there was someone standing right behind the Veil on the other side of the archway, their words were inaudible except for " faint whispering and murmuring noises " coming from the other side of the Veil.

When the living person tried to communicate, the dead would try harder and their whispering and murmuring would become louder.

If those who heard the whispering stared at the archway long enough, they would shortly become entranced and mesmerised by it, believing it had a kind of beauty about it old though it was , unknowingly walking towards it, intrigued by the gently rippling Veil, and feeling a very strong inclination to climb up on the dais and walk through it.

However, this would prove fatal, as passing through the Veil would cause instant death. The Veil reacted to the passage of a living person by fluttering for a moment "as though in a high wind," then falling back into place. It was impossible for others to pull whoever passed through out without passing through and dying themselves, and it was already too late for those passing through to be saved despite only a few seconds passing , as they were already dead.

Hermione, however, urged caution and eventually to leave the room altogether. It seemed to take Sirius an age to fall: his body curved in a graceful arc as he sank backwards through the ragged veil hanging from the arch. And, as quickly as that, Harry loses his godfather , the last of the Black family , who has never had a chance to really live freely in the wizarding world after his escape from Azkaban PA2 and flying away from Hogwarts on Buckbeak after being re-captured PA Bellatrix Lestrange is not only horrible and nasty, but also certifiably mad.

She makes Lucius Malfoy look reasonable. Neville Longbottom determined to keep fighting the Death Eaters, especially those who tortured his parents, as he and Harry are the only two left of their rescue mission companions.

And Harry saw the look of mingled fear and surprise on his godfather's wasted, once-handsome face as he fell through the ancient doorway and disappeared behind the veil, which fluttered for a moment as though in a high wind and then fell back into place. And I walked into the kitchen crying and Neil said to me, "What on earth is wrong? Neil doesn't know who the person is. But I said, "I've just killed the person.

And he said, "Well, don't do it then Harry Potter Wiki: Department of Mysteries.
