Can you quench thirst with beer

It is sort of odd that the beer doesn't quench your thirst when initially drinking it - after all, it's mostly water. Perhaps your body is conditioned to recognize beer as a poor source of hydration - meaning, I wonder if someone who has NEVER had beer would find it thirst quenching the first time they tried it?

I don't think anyone actually drinks beer to quench their thirst, seeing as it actually dehydrates you further. Absolutely, the thirstier I feel the more I drink. But then I've moved on from my dalliance with strong beers which are known to dehydrate.
